Terms of Service for Babel

1. Acceptance of these Terms

These Terms of Service govern your use of the babelの塔 Discord application ("Babel"). By posting in a channel that Babel translates, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not post in those channels.

2. Description of the Service

Babel is an automatic translation bot. In designated Discord channels it reads each message posted and replies with translations into English, Japanese, Latin American Spanish, Korean, Traditional Chinese, French and Italian. Babel is an experimental project, provided free of charge.

3. Content is Sent to a Third Party

Translation is performed by Google's Gemini API, not by us. The text of your message is transmitted to Google in order to translate it. Do not post confidential, sensitive or personal information in a channel Babel translates. This is described in detail in Section 5 of the Babel Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms and which you should read before using Babel.

4. Translations Are Not Guaranteed to Be Accurate

Babel's translations are machine-generated and may be wrong, incomplete, misleading, or may alter the tone or meaning of the original. They must not be relied upon for anything consequential, including medical, legal, financial or safety-related communication. The original message, not Babel's translation, is the authoritative version of what a person said. Misunderstandings arising from a translation are not our responsibility.

5. Eligibility

You must meet Discord's minimum age requirement and comply with Discord's Terms of Service and Community Guidelines in order to use Babel.

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • use Babel to harass, abuse, impersonate or harm any other person;
  • deliberately submit content designed to manipulate the translation model into producing abusive, deceptive or prohibited output;
  • flood or script Babel's channels in a way that degrades the service or exhausts our translation quota;
  • use Babel for any unlawful purpose, or in breach of Discord's Terms of Service or Google's terms.

7. Availability

Babel is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. It depends on a third-party API and may fail, rate-limit, refuse particular content, or stop working entirely. We may modify, suspend or discontinue it at any time without notice.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties and Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or exemplary damages arising out of or in connection with your use of, or inability to use, Babel, including damages arising from an inaccurate translation.

9. No Affiliation

Babel is an unofficial, independently operated project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed, sponsored or approved by Google LLC or Discord Inc. All trademarks are the property of their respective owners.

10. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to Babel at any time, with or without notice, for conduct that breaches these Terms or that we consider harmful to other users or to the service. Server administrators may remove Babel from their server at any time.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will announce them in the servers where Babel is installed and update the effective date at the top of this page.
