Privacy Policy for Babel

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains what information the babelの塔 Discord application ("Babel") collects, how that information is used, and what rights you have regarding your data. Please read Section 5 in particular, which describes the third-party translation service Babel relies on.

3. What Babel Does

Babel is an automatic translation bot for international Discord communities. In a small number of specifically designated channels, it reads each message posted and replies with translations of that message into English, Japanese, Latin American Spanish, Korean, Traditional Chinese, French and Italian, so that members who do not share a language can hold a single conversation.

4. Data Collection

In its designated channels only, Babel processes:

  • the text content of messages posted in that channel;
  • the usernames of any users mentioned in such a message, which Babel substitutes in place of the raw mention so that its reply does not ping anyone;
  • channel and server IDs, in order to determine whether a channel is one it has been configured to translate.

Babel ignores messages from bots, messages in any channel it has not been explicitly configured for, messages consisting only of a mention, only a URL, only an emoji or custom emote, and messages of a single character.

Babel has no database. It does not write message content, usernames, or any other data to disk, and it retains nothing after a message has been translated.

5. Third-Party Processing: Google Gemini

Babel does not perform translation itself. To produce a translation it transmits the text of your message, including any substituted usernames, to Google's Gemini API, and posts back the result. This means that the content of messages you post in Babel's designated channels is sent to Google.

Babel currently uses the Gemini API on Google's free service tier. Under Google's terms for that tier, Google may retain submitted content and use it to improve its products and services, which can include training its models. We do not control Google's retention or use of this data. Your use of Babel is therefore also subject to Google's Privacy Policy and the Gemini API terms.

Because of this, please do not post confidential, sensitive or personal information in a channel that Babel translates. If you do not wish your messages to be sent to Google, do not post in those channels. Every channel Babel operates in is a specific, designated channel; it does not read messages anywhere else in the server.

6. Data Usage

Message content is used for one purpose only: producing the translation that Babel posts in reply. It is not used for advertising, profiling, moderation, analytics, or any purpose other than translation.

7. Data Sharing

We do not sell user data. The only third party that receives message content is Google, in the manner and for the reason described in Section 5. Translations Babel produces are posted publicly in the channel where the original message was sent, and are therefore visible to anyone who can see that channel.

8. Data Storage and Security

Babel runs on a dedicated virtual private server managed by us. It holds message content only in memory, for the seconds required to request and post a translation. Nothing is written to a database or log file. Because nothing is stored, there is no store of message content for us to secure, disclose or lose.

9. Data Retention

Babel retains no message content whatsoever. Translations it has posted remain in Discord as ordinary channel messages, subject to Discord's retention and to the server's own moderation. Content transmitted to Google is retained according to Google's policies, as described in Section 5, and is outside our control.

10. Your Rights

You have the following rights regarding your data:

  • Access: request a copy of any information we hold about you. In practice we hold none.
  • Correction: request correction of any inaccurate information.
  • Deletion: request deletion of your information. We can delete translation messages Babel has posted; we cannot delete data held by Google, though you may contact Google directly regarding data they hold.

11. Children's Privacy

Babel is not directed at children. Discord requires all account holders to be at least 13 years old, or older where local law sets a higher minimum age. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone below that age.

12. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will announce them in the servers where Babel is installed and update the effective date at the top of this page.
